NEW ‘BUSINESS CHAMPION’ TALKS TO EPPING FOREST CHAMBER
Cllr Chris Whitbread, Deputy Leader of EFDC and newly appointed ‘Business Champion’ addressed a packed business breakfast meeting hosted by Epping Forest Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday 21st July at the Bell Hotel, Epping.
The portfolio holder for Economic Development said “I want to build a strong relationship with the Chamber of Commerce. We want to hear what you have to say and how we can help. Partnership may be a buzzword but we are keen to encourage you to partner us and work together.”
Mr Whitbread knows all about being a local businessman, particularly in this poor economic climate, as he heads up Millers estate agents in Epping based in the High Road since 1974. Reference was made to the Council’s ambitious vision for the future of Debden Broadway and the consultation underway in partnership with Essex County Council in Epping.
He also set out some of what the Council is already doing to help in these difficult times. “We have taken onboard concerns about parking from local traders and we believe our decision to provide free Saturday parking in some of our car parks has been beneficial. This year we froze parking charges. We want to encourage residents to support their local shops. The Council has also acted by reducing payment terms on invoices and wants to use local suppliers wherever possible.’
“We see the Epping Forest Chamber as an important partner and we look forward to working positively together in the future. On my part I will do all I can to make it easier to contact us and get information.”
Sam Gooday, of chartered accountants Blitz Gooday, also gave a talk packed with topical tax tips providing details about recent tax developments and planning opportunities particularly relevant for small businesses.
Iggy Quazi, Chair of the Epping Forest Chamber said “It was good to see the interest in this meeting. Contrary to the present economic climate, there is a positive vibrancy in small businesses in the district and this Chamber aims to play a key role in helping to facilitate vital communication and engage with SMEs to achieve joint goals.”
BUSINESS CHAMPION FOR EPPING FOREST
BUSINESS CHAMPION FOR EPPING FORESTEpping estate agent Chris Whitbread, deputy leader of Epping Forest District Council, has been appointed the district’s Business Champion.
His role is to keep in touch with local businesses so that the local authority can react to their needs.
“It is about listening,” he told guests at a packed Epping Forest Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting..”We are one community, whether as a business in Epping Forest or if we live here. I am optimistic about the future – and so should you be.”
He urged employers to contact him about what they feel the local authority should do to ensure the business community is successful for the local economy.
Said Cllr Whitbread: “We have to be realistic about what we can do as a council, but we want to be a facilitator. You will be knocking on an open door. I am striving to keep parking charges frozen for another year. After all, what’s more environmentally friendly than to shop locally.
“I want to be involved. I will come to breakfast meetings or anything else I am invited to. The council is trying to be in partnership with business. But you must give value for money. I would rather deal with local businesses than faces we do not know.”
And to bolster this, greater priority is being given to competitive tenders from local firms for local authority contracts. And an Accord agreement is expected to be signed in October to help district businesses have an improved chance of gaining council work in future.
He said the council had already made a start with free Saturday parking and economic development issues had now been switched to the finance department from planning.. Debden Broadway was “being brought into the 21st century”, the future of North Weald was being looked at and new developments were planned in St John’s Road, Epping.
In answer to a question, he agreed to review the possibility of reviving the Epping Forest Business Awards with the presentations made during the annual civic awards ceremony.
Footnote: a 1% rise in council tax brings in about £70,000 to the local authority.
